New Quilt Pattern : 'Typeset'

What can I say…. the typewriter ‘thing’ is always a ‘thing’ at Ruby’s place. How can a modern laptop compare with a wonderfully engineered piece of equipment like a typewriter? well….of course I couldn’t do this on it, but I am always happy to pay homage to an invention that changed so much. I love the precision of typewriting - I learned to type on one and it was a more careful way of working than we have today when you can just bash anything into your keyboard and play around with it later. The sound of typewriter keys hitting the paper with their imprint and the ping of the carriage return conjure up images of smokey war room memos and agatha christie like novels. The sight of a typewritten letter is a heart warming experience because you know it is from days gone by and a voice from another time.

I designed this quilt to accompany my mini typewriter quilt pattern and I hope you agree that they make a good pairing. It also gave me the chance to make a low volume quilt which has been on my mind for absolutely ages. I’m normally a strong colour girl, but recently as I have been inspired by some fabulous low volume quilts I see on Instagram and was happy to experiment. I’ve been stashing away modern and retro text print fabrics along with some low volume florals and it was a joy to stitch. Everything just melded together in one lovely mush of ‘typeset’.

The joy of this pattern is that it comes with templates for all the letters and punctuation symbols that you could need to customise your typewriter keys. Add a quotation…. add a line from a poem….add your mantra. Make it for a graduation present….make it for your home office…..customise it for the person….customise it for the setting. It is super quick and fun to do with fusible web and machine appliqué and with add that retro vibe to your home.
